Let’s start by answering an initial question. How many inhabitants are there in Italy? According to data published by the World Bank, Italy’s population in 2021 is just over 59 million. The highest number of inhabitants was reached in 2014 when there were almost 60.8 million residents. Since 2015 there has been a slow decline.

Rome, Florence, Turin, Bologna, Naples. These are some of the most beautiful cities in Italy. But what are the top 10 cities in Italy by population?

The city with the largest number of inhabitants in Italy is Rome. The Italian capital, located in the Lazio Region, has a total of 2,761,632 inhabitants. Rome also had an increase in inhabitants from 2011 to 2021 with a growth of +5.52 percent. In second position among the cities with the most inhabitants in Italy we find a city that is growing a lot: Milan. In fact, the Lombard capital has 1,371,498 inhabitants and a growth of more than 10% in terms of population. Rome and Milan are the two leading cities that at the same time are growing in terms of inhabitants. The same is not true for the following cities. Naples, in third position, has a total of 914,758 inhabitants in 2021 with a decrease of -9.41%. In fourth position is Turin, in Campania, with 848,885 inhabitants and a change of -2.69% and followed by Palermo with 630,828 and -4.08%. Also among the top 10 cities by population in Italy that lost inhabitants from 2011 to 2021 is Genoa, which currently has 560,688 inhabitants and a change from 10 years ago of -4.35%. Closing out the Top 10 are Bologna, Florence, Bari and Catania. All these cities are seeing growth in their inhabitants with Bologna, for example, having a growth of +5.62 percent and Florence +2.53 percent.
