What is monkeypox?

Monkeypox is a viral zoonosis (i.e. a virus transmitted from animals to humans is responsible) that produces symptoms similar to those observed in smallpox patients in the past, although clinically less severe.

How we get infected

The disease often subsides with symptoms that usually resolve spontaneously within 14 to 21 days, is not very contagious among humans, and is transmitted through exposure to exhaled droplets and from contact with infected skin lesions or contaminated materials.

Symptoms (including fever, headache, muscle pain, and rash) can be mild or severe, and lesions can be very itchy or painful.
